Kids Out
Every year Rotary Clubs all over the country sponsor a day out at a funfair for disadvantaged kids. The five clubs in West Norfolk cooperate to send several bus loads of kids to Pleasurewood Hills for the day.
Kids Out 2010
After more than a decade, I had the privilege of helping out in person as a marshal on one of the three coaches from West Norfolk. Things have really changed in the ten years or so since I last helped out on the day. Twenty or so Rotarians used to have to supervise two kids each, all day, including going on the rides with them. We ended up dead on our feet and slept all the way home on the coach. Nowadays, the children are all supervised by helpers from their schools, and the three Rotarians are there simply to do the admin, a doddle.
Chris Sykes, from the King’s Lynn Trinity Club, who organises Kids Out on behalf of district, ran a hospitality tent so we passed the time most amiably in excellent company. Throughout district over a thousand disadvantaged kids were treated to the day out, and if you want to know if it was worthwhile, you only had to see their excitement as they boarded the coaches to come home.
A very satisfying day out, I recommend it to anybody who wants to see Rotary in action.
